When her debut single “Far Boy” achieved viral status, Leah Marie Mason caught fire and was quickly thrust onto the country music scene and became an artist to watch immediately out of the gate. Where many others who’ve had a similar success story have crumbled under this type of instant pressure, Mason has continuously stepped up and elevated her game with each subsequent song release, “I Wish” and “Hannah,” both which tapped into mostly acoustic based instrumentation and allowed her incredible singer/songwriter vibe to deliver the lyrical goods.

Mason now returns with “Miss Us Then,” and she gives us a completely different look than we’ve previously heard from her with a strong pop crossover feel, but one that also stays bent towards highlighting her vocals and lyrics without ever overpowering them with heavy production.

Written By Mason and Bonnie Dymond, “Miss Us Then” brings us straight into a moment in the here and now where something sparks a past memory of an ex; first in a remembering the thrill of the chase kind of way, but then also reminding her through the reminiscing that once the chase is done and the fish is caught (so to speak) the relationship isn’t how it played out in her head and that’s why they inevitably split.

“It’s always the thrill of the chase, until the chase ain’t new,” is the line that opens the song as Mason leans her vocals against a melody provided by softer guitars through the verse that are basically only there behind her voice to act as its accompaniment.

She continues reliving the night that her and her ex first met, referring to him as “all that shined in a dim lit room” and remembering the way she wanted him, and everyone else did too.

However, the focal point of the song comes during the chorus and throughout the bridge where Mason lists all the different exciting feelings and emotions that she misses about the way it was back when everything was still so fresh and new, which are coincidently the very things that sparked the memories: missing you, stolen time, the moments, the waiting, lying next to someone else and wishing it was you, obsessing over if she’ll ever see him again, etc.

Leah Marie Mason’s star is already on the rise, and she has absolutely captured the attention of the country music media. With “Miss Us Then,” she delivers her next impactful strike that combines a memorable melody with lyrics that hit perfectly on emotions we all experience in the aftermath of a breakup as we’re rediscovering ourselves and who we are, while always being mindful to keep the spotlight on what is becoming her defining characteristic and signature strong suit: her vocals!
