Smithfield, the duo comprised of Jennifer Fiedler and Trey Smith, are certainly no strangers to the country music faithful. With acclaimed singles “Hey Whiskey” and “If It Ain’t You,” and over 30 appearances on the hallowed stage at the Grand Ole Opry, the duo has built an incredible fan base while continuing to attract new fans with every song released.

Their new single “Something Sexy,” the follow-up to “Sunday Best” and the second glimpse into their forthcoming EP (due out later this year), will most certainly continue that trend.

Wanting to a write a sexy song, the duo tapped into the 2010ish era of country music and leaned against those steamy radio hits to be inspired, though the song never sounds out of touch or dated in comparison to today’s modern branded country music; Rather, it comes across as a refreshing reminder of where the modern era comes from.

Painting the picture with their lyrics, they sing of the type of night it’s going to be and instantly trigger something from your own romantic memory bank: “lights out, lay around, t-shirt on the couch,” “turn the TV on just to wind up making out,” etc.

However, for the night to happen that way, the duo laments that the mood needs to be just right. And to get that mood right, they turn to the country records that can set it because as Fiedler sings in the second verse, “I’m way too country for some Barry White.”

And those steamy country songs certainly get mentioned – everything from those by Chris Young, to songs by Tim & Faith, Eric Church, Lonestar, John Michael Montgomery, and Keith Urban.

Smithfield gives the proper back and forth between the male and female perspectives throughout the song which adds a certain depth to it, while they use the overall sound of the song to perfectly suit the era that the lyrics touch upon as they remind you of when sexy country songs flooded the radio and made you fall in love.
