Alabama newcomer, 17-year-old Alice Nelson has been putting forth an incredible effort to make the rounds in Music City and establish herself amongst the country music community. Her crafty songwriting prowess and likeable, down-home personality have landed her the opportunity to be a featured performer at several songwriting rounds, earn top-notch co-writes, and ink a deal with MC1.

Having now achieved several of her initial goals, Nelson is ready to open her next chapter by taking a huge leap forward on her country music path with the release of her debut single “Girlfriend.”

The song, co-written by Nelson and Carmen Melton Bennett, plays out like a heartfelt, open letter to her ex-boyfriend’s new girl of the moment, warning her of all the red flags that “love” has seemingly clouded her judgement from seeing about him.

“Girlfriend, don’t believe those lies he’s been telling you,” Nelson sings to open the song as she hypothetically wraps her caring arms around his new girl before continuing to warn her of all the different things she needs to beware of about him; how he’s checking out every blonde in the place, how she’s probably paying his rent for him because he’s always broke, how he’s never paid her back for it but always shows up wearing new clothes, etc.

The straight-forward, though yet somehow still comforting line in the chorus, “Nothing hurts as bad as the truth,” perfectly sets up Nelson to then use the hook to add the proverbial signature to her letter to the new girlfriend when she sympathetically sings, “coming from the girlfriend before you.”

Many songs of a similar nature come from the perspective of a scorned ex, but Alice Nelson has flipped the script with her approach to this lyric and it’s one the reasons this song is such a strong first outing. Instead of playing the role of the scorned ex, Nelson is instead singing girl to girl/friend to friend and looking out for the next one in his line of fire.

Similar, though not identical to Carly Pearce’s “Next Girl,” Alice Nelson’s “Girlfriend” is going to be receiving that comparison a lot, but that’s certainly not a bad thing and it will only play to her favor to elevate everything that she’s already accomplished in Nashville, while bringing her to the next level and setting her in motion for her next steps as she continues to emerge on the scene.
