MATT STELL - Breakin' In Boots - RECORDS Nashville

With smash hits already to his credit including “Prayed For You,” “That Ain’t Me No More,” and “Everywhere But On,” multi-platinum sensation Matt Stell is no stranger to country music fans. His boy next door charm fuses with his clean vocals, memorable melodies, and honest woven lyrics to grab the listener from the opening notes and hold them with a tight grip until the final chords are struck.

Following his highly acclaimed EP, One Of Us, and the very well-received revamp of its small-town anthem title track with hot rising star Chase Matthew, Stell now returns to captivate with his brand-new single, “Breakin’ In Boots.”

Co-written by Matt, Joe Fox, Ben Stennis, and Nate Cyphert, the song leans into a brooding melody that brings together driving guitars and an insatiably modern country flash to expertly match the instrumentation against the brash warning that Stell pumps into the lyrics as he sings from his broken hearted point of view to the next guy in line who’ll get his heart broken by the girl all the guys want, but that they can’t ever tame.

Lamenting through each of the verses (and the bridge) that while she might let you pull her in close for a spin on the dance floor and that she’ll lean into you like she means it, her flirtatious nature will inevitably only end up with her wrecking so much more than your Friday night when she leaves you lonely.

The bounce along vibe of the chorus speaks directly to those who are part of the trail of broken hearts as they lift a lesson-learned fist into the air to float it in perfect timing with the rhythm while Stell swirls his vocals into the truth-filled punch of the lyrics:

“Don't think that she doesn't 'cause she knows what she's doin'

She'll burn you like the bourbon in the bottle she's shootin'

She's a cowboy killer, that's the cold hard truth

You can try to love her, but she'll leave your heart breakin' in boots

(Heart breakin' in boots)”

We all have stories of nights out at the bar like this in our backlog of not-so-great memories that we try to forget, and while there are so many songs right now that come at us from the female perspective telling against the guys, Stell flips the entire script when he places the girl in the dive bar driver’s seat, as the connivingly flirting suspect who leads the guy to broken hearted last call.

Matt Stell has a tremendous knack for taking easily relatable situations and putting the emotions and feels of them perfectly into the words we want to say ourselves. He’s done it his entire career, which has been the signature catalyst for allowing his songs to resonate so quickly with the listener, and it’s something he’s once again done with “Breakin’ In Boots” as he speaks to the broken hearted through their radio speakers.
