On the back of buzzed about song releases “Naïve” and “Easy Like That,” rising country starlet Erin Gibney has made major strides over the past year with high profile tour dates alongside Sister Hazel, a toe dip into the waters of the pure pop world with “That’s What I’m Looking For,” and the right selection of local gigs that increased her visibility within the vast Nashville music scene.

She now returns with her new single, “Exit Signs.”

Self-proclaiming that this is the most vulnerable she’s been with her music thus far, Gibney allows the driving mid-tempo to lace an ultra-modern country flare as she pumps her voice into the uneasy feelings that come with having to break off a relationship when the flame has fizzled to a flicker.

Co-written with Kris Allen of American Idol fame, who also provides harmony backups on the song, the lyric sees her embracing the tough notion of ripping it off like a band-aid as she admits that they were quick to rush into the feeling at the start of everything, which she surrounds with cleverly written comparative imagery that sings of lusting over each other on the open road while singing along with the radio.

Confessing out of the opening verse, “I never thought I’d want it to end,” Erin very maturely places the coming breakup on her shoulders as she punches into the anthem styled rhythm of the just not feeling it like you still are vibe of the chorus:

“Now I’m drifting, but you don’t feel any different

I’m hitting the brakes while you’re speeding

Feels like we’re bound to crash

On the same road, but we’re just in two directions

I never thought for a second that I’d change my mind

From driving in the fast lane to looking for the exit signs”

Utilizing the second verse to transparently share reasons why she’s fell away from their lust fueled start, she confides that she can see the storms ahead while tenderly sharing that she doesn’t want to break his heart or open his scars, providing honest depth to the confusing circumstances that often arrive with having to be the one doing the breaking up; something she also does in the bridge when she repeatedly sings that it’s weighing heavy on her.

Whenever an artist allows themselves to pull truth from their real-life situations and can grip the realities of the swirling emotions that arrived within them, that’s when you get a raw and real performance on song that can truly connect with the hearts of the listener. Erin Gibney does that with “Exit Signs” as she wears her broken heart on her sleeve, allowing her story to fully resonate through your speakers and strike the right heart chords.
