A Thousand Horses are certainly no strangers to country music fans. The group scored two top 40 hits out of the gate with their #1 single “Smoke” and its follow-up “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial,” while in more recent times they delivered “A Song to Remember” which dug a little deeper into their southern rock branded country style.

Little did we know it then, but “A Song to Remember” also served a grander purpose in that it gave us a very good preview of things to come from A Thousand Horses as they continued to explore all the different facets of their influences.

Two years later, and A Thousand Horses have now reemerged to surprise their fans with the release of their brand-new song “Broken Heartland.”

The song, written by Bill Satcher, Michael Hobby, Jonathon Singleton, and Andrew Dorff, offers a balance that walks right down that middle line of country and southern rock that has defined the group’s history, but it also sees them exploring a bit outside of their comfort zone to lean even further into the classic rock-n-roll side of their arsenal more so than they ever have before.

The catchy, toe-tapping rhythm pulls you through the verses as the broken-hearted, beaten down tone is set lyrically through cleverly worded lines such as, “No welcome sign at the county line, just one that says goodbye” and “Every restaurant is tables for one only,” before that catchiness then gives way to a pure anthem like quality as it slaps us into the chorus and gets a fist pumping in the air:

It’s a town full of thorns missing all their flowers

cover up tattoos at unhappy hours

Sitting at the bar with drinks in their hands

just another day in broken heartland

The shredding guitars spliced into the bridge adds a big sound ala an arena rock vibe, while a lighter in the air moment sees them scaling back the music to ignite an emotional charge when the song wraps its arms around you like a long-lost friend to let you know you’re not alone:

“If you’re looking for me, you know where I am

Hanging out hurting in broken heart land”

A Thousand Horses doesn’t necessarily redefine their signatures here, but they do turn up some specific elements of their sound to a much higher octane than ever before which gives “Broken Heartland” a very fresh, innovative feel that lets the listener know that the group is not only back, but that they’re doing things their way this time around.
