Country music has a history of songs where being out on the road in some fashion – whether it’s performing music, rodeoing, or being a truck driver (Jon’s other profession when he’s not playing music) - is exactly where the subject needs to be, but that doesn’t make it easier for them to leave someone they love behind while they’re out there doing it.

Texas country artist Jon Hope adds another of these type of songs to country music’s vast resume with his newest single “The Highway.”

In the very opening verse, Hope sets the entire story in motion with two lines: “Seven long weeks that I’ve been gone” and “I’m headed west, back to my home.”

He also alludes to how lonely and monotonous it is to be out on the road with this outstanding picture painting line from the second verse: “The road is a cold one, it’s black top and old songs.”

Hope then uses the chorus to ask his better half to “wait for me baby by the light of the moon,” while also reminding her that that his being gone will all be over soon; at least until the next time the road calls him back out.

There’s a conflicted feeling in Hope’s vocal delivery that tells you he clearly knows that he’s right where he needs to be, but as right as it feels, it doesn’t feel right without her there with him.

You combine that aspect with the slow waltz feel of the melody, and that specific missing you feeling that shines through the instrumentation enhances the song’s depth that much more and makes it destined to become a dance hall favorite.
