Over her first three releases this year as part of CCB Nashville’s #newmusicfriday initiative, Megan Mullins Owen has unveiled several different dynamics of who she is as an artist, songwriter, and performer, which has defined her sound as purely her own as she moves fluidly between several different vibes and styles while always mindfully retaining her signature feels.

Following her incredible “He Breaks Things,” Mullins Owen now returns with “Trampoline.”

The song, written by Megan with frequent collaborator Sarah Majors and Mark D. Sanders, leans into a summery tilted vibe in its melody and instrumentation, that twists into a modern country tilt that makes this song a perfect candidate for the current state of country radio.

Showcasing her lyrical prowess and ability to skewer outside the normal boxes that so often puts constraints on artists, while this song does carry that fresh, feel-good vibe synonymous with summer songs, Mullins Owen steers away from all the cliché topics that are the stereotypes often associated with these melodies, and instead sings about the ups and downs of falling in love.

Initially describing the guy as being just her type, she quickly then switches gears as she sings about how she’s always falling heart first which will sometimes lead to her getting hurt before she eventually regains the strength to bounce back – akin to a trampoline.

Using comparatives between love and the functions of a trampoline, she sings us through a chorus that includes several clever lines such as:

“Like a trampoline, Love has its little downs and ups.”

“Like a trampoline, I’m either floating on air or flat on my butt.”

“Never really know what the next big bounce will bring, like a trampoline.”

However, where the lyric truly elevates this song is when she hits the second verse and pushes into the complicated emotions that develop during these up and down moments, talking of being so high when she’s in love and so low when they say goodbye.

Insert an amazing start and stop clap along into the production that drives into the final chorus and gives this song a built-in audience participation moment, and you have another release from Megan Mullins Owen that raises the bar high by connecting straight to the heart of the average country music listener through her uncanny ability to bring depth and understanding to the confusing saga of love that we all experience.
